Insurance Surveys

When in the process of looking for boat insurance you may find the requirement for a survey. Majority of insurance companies like for a vessel to be surveyed before they can insure accurately, the survey will help to outline the value and condition of the vessel allowing for correct coverage.

What will the survey entail in a steel boat?

 A steel boat survey will involve the close examination of numerous parts of the vessel such as;

1 - The Hull,  The surveyor will conduct an inspection with an ultrasonic thickness gauge which will display the thickness of the hull and make sure the steel is strong and fit for purpose. The surveyor will also take a close look at the wear strip and make sure it is mounted efficiently and still is suitable for further usage.

2 -  Checking for signs of damage, The surveyor will complete a visual inspection of the vessel checking for any deep gouges / extreme corrosion visible and include them in the survey.

3 - List of equipment present, The surveyor will take a look around the inside of the vessel and will put together a list of equipment present such as power inverters, calorifiers and solar pannels.

4 - Recommendations / Repairs, The surveyor will compile a list close to what is seen in a vehicle mot. The list will contain items that the surveyor would like to see be repaired as soon as possible and a list of items that need to be looked at some point in the near future.
